About OVER

OVER (2020-2022) is an offshoot of the Coletivos series, which Cássio Vasconcellos has been developing since 2008. The images, composed using a computer, are made from various aerial images captured by the artist.

While in Collectives the artist organizes the images according to typologies: planes, cars, motorcycles, etc., commenting on our consumerist society by highlighting the impact of human action in the world, in OVER he brings together images from various junkyards photographed by him in Brazil and abroad. Vasconcellos cuts out each element, bringing them together in a large composition that maintains the scale of the relationships between the objects. Thus, an image emerges that inhabits the space between fiction and reality as captured by its documental raw material.

OVER presents a scenario that seems to point to a dystopian future, but which, in fact, brings together fragments of the present. The exaggerated agglomeration denounces the misleading idea of “disposal”, given that objects do not cease to exist in the world when we throw them away. Rather, they inhabit other places. The name of the work makes reference to not only the nature of the composition but also the angle of the photographs.

About Collectives

In this series, Vasconcellos instigates a visual debate on the urban chaos of modern civilization by exploring jam-packed situations typical of our society: crowded beaches; cluttered car parking lots; motorcycle gatherings; huge aircraft boneyards in the US; masses of people; and the truck pandemonium in São Paulo’s Ceasa, Latin America’s largest municipal fresh food wholesale market. All these situations were shot using the right angle of a helicopter view. Constructed by using hundreds of photos shot during the project, the finalized images recreate an effect that juggles between reality and fantasy bluffing our senses in perfect tableaux compositions of color, line and geometry.
