About Shangai

“Each work asks for something different, how it should be photographed, what technic to use, which camera to choose from, etc.. Every photo equipment, like any drugstore medicine, comes with its ‘information leaflet’. I enjoy breaking up and moving beyond these sets of rules. Of course, technical knowledge is valuable, however, it has to work for an intention and not be placed above it”, remarks Vasconcellos. In the Shanghai series, all his effort is focused in a single frame. The images reveal variations of the Chinese metropolis’ weather, the diffuse light of the famous Shanghai smog, the feverish night light pollution and the nuances of daylight. All this array of visual sensibilities and textures is shot from a single, inert, resolute frame.
